Yesterday, I rode a combine with my cousin Seth. His grandpa was driving. Seth was sitting in the seat. I had to sit on the floor. I climbed on the combine. Only four or five steps.
He pushed the button to stop the picker when we dumped. He pushed a button to bring the arm out. Then he pushed another button and then it dumped wheat seeds into the tractor’s bin.
When it turns from summer he’s going to get the tractor and plant the wheat seeds. Then next summer it will grow and they will cut more wheat.

Wow–that’s a lot bigger than my lawnmower! After he pushed the button to bring the arm out, did he push another button to bring the legs out?

Hi Tom,
I grew up on a farm too. I rode around with my Uncle while he combined farms in our area. Mostly corn and beans though.
Did you take pictures?

Hi Tom. I am a Grandma now and I have never ridden in a combine. Did you learn a lot about how combines work while you were riding?
Have a great day!

Wow! You rode a combine? That is so cool! I’ve way older than you and I’ve never done anything like that! How long will it be after the wheat seeds grow and they’ll be able to cut the wheat?

Well, you have had an experience that I have never had. I have never had a ride in a Combine Harvester. It sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I like your adopted pig on your blog. It looks good.

Did the combine make a lot of noise or was it quiet inside? I’ve only seen combines on TV.

Thomas:
I am so jealous you got to ride in a combine. I love riding in the combine. I used to ride more when I was your age. I used to ride with my uncle Tom. I usually fell asleep when I rode. I am glad you got to ride. Have a good summer!

Thomas,
Wheat harvest is a very special time of year. Everyone has a job and they are expected to do it to the best of their ability during harvest. I didn’t grow up on a farm but I had uncles who had land and planted wheat and corn. I rode when I was about Em’s age. They didn’t let me ride when I was your age because back then we didn’t have as many buttons to push and their was a lot more danger in an open cab. I did go with my aunt to feed all the workers though. That was a real chore for her too. But somehow she really enjoyed watching the hungry workers come to the tailgate for their meals. They were always hungry and very appreciative of the home made food. We had fried chicken and roast beef with all the good side dishes. And there was always dessert. I remember we didn’t have to call them to come eat. They saw the pickup pullup in the side road and within minutes they were rounding up around the food.
I’m glad you like to ride the combine and enjoy the farm life. It is the heart of Kansas living.

That sounds like a great day on the farm, Tom. Wisconsin has lots of farms but I have never ridden a combine or tractor. Do you think you might like to own a farm some day?

Hi Tom, I’m a grandma, too. When I was your age I spent summers on a farm and saw all kinds of things like combines, spreaders, etc. Never got to ride in one though – wasn’t as brave as you.

P.S. I like your blog header – great job!
